LexisNexis interviewed more than 1,500 people who had recently hired a lawyer and found that the top three ways people find clients are:

  1. A friend
  2. Internet search
  3. Referral

This shows just how important building up a word of mouth reputation is - with internet playing an important role in enhancing it.

As well as making sure your website is accessible, up-to-date and full of content that demonstrates your expertise, lawyers should also concentrate on building relationships outside of the internet. This can be achieved through conferences and networking events for instance.

These numbers are based on USA citizens, it would be interesting to see if they would differ wildly in the UK - I wouldn't think so...
